Prince Harry made a pointed comment about “hanging up” his military uniform before offering advice to former servicemen in his Netflix documentary.
The eagerly awaited docu-series, Heart of Invictus, follows a group of athletes on their journey to the Paralympic-style sporting competition, the Invictus Games.
Harry established this sporting event in 2014 for injured and sick military personnel and veterans.
The most recent games were held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
The 2027 Invictus Games are scheduled to be held in Birmingham, UK, which could present a predicament for the Sussexes.
As the founder of the Games, it’s highly likely that Harry will travel to the UK for the 2027 event.
Since he began dating Meghan in 2017, she has accompanied him at every event. Their appearances at the Invictus Games have been some of their most high-profile as a couple, reports the Mirror.
However, with the Games set to take place in the UK in three years, it raises the question of whether Meghan will attend. This is due to Harry losing a High Court battle earlier this year over the loss of his UK police protection when he is in the country, following his decision to leave Britain for the United States.
In the third installment of his revealing documentary, Prince Harry is caught on video chat with the UK Invictus team, seemingly making a subtle jab regarding military garb. Rallying the troops for last year’s competition, he says, “You did it every day, wearing uniform and for one reason or another that uniform had to be hung up. That service that runs in your blood, our blood, never leaves the body. It is there.”
This poignant reflection follows the controversy stemming from Prince Harry being barred from sporting his military attire after stepping back from Royal duties with Meghan Markle, resulting in stripped military titles. At King Charles Coronation, he donned a morning suit, standing out from other royals in their military uniforms.
For the Queen’s funeral, despite public outcry for him to wear his military uniform, Harry appeared in a suit. An exception occurred when he was allowed to dress in uniform during a vigil for his grandmother at Westminster Hall.
Subsequent to the event, reports surfaced that Prince Harry was left “devastated” over having to remove the “ER” emblem from his gear, a symbol representing his late grandmother, while Prince William retained it. A friend disclosed to The Sunday Times, “He [Harry] is heartbroken. To remove his grandmother’s initials feels very intentional.”
Reports claim Prince Harry was close to donning his morning suit to avoid apparent “humiliation” at a Royal gathering. Amidst the same incident, Harry was caught on audio unabashedly using the F-bomb while dispensing candid advice to competitors.
He declared: “So when you’re out there kicking a–, trying to win a medal, or just having fun, making your family incredibly proud, when you feel that feeling in your throat and you feel like you might want to cry, then just f–king cry. I mean that.”
Additionally, the series sheds light on Harry’s confession that he felt isolated without a support system, which exacerbated the trauma of losing his mother, Princess Diana, seemingly throwing shade at the Royal Family once more.
In what seems to be another covert criticism of his Royal kin, Harry reflects: “Look, I can only speak for my personal experience, my tour of Afghanistan in 2012, flying Apaches, somewhere after that there was an unravelling and the trigger for me was actually returning from Afghanistan.”
“But the stuff that was coming up was from 1997, from the age of 12, losing my mum at such a young age, the trauma that I had I was never really aware of, it was never discussed, I didn’t really talk about it – and I suppressed it like most youngsters would have done but when it all came fizzing out I was bouncing off the walls, I was like what is going on here, I am now feeling everything as opposed to being numb.”
“The biggest struggle for me is no-one around me could really help, I didn’t have that support structure that network or that expert advice to identify what was actually going on with me. Unfortunately, like most of us the first time you really consider therapy is when you are lying on the floor in the foetal position probably wishing you had dealt with some of this stuff previously and that’s what I really want to change.”
